Church of San Luigi dei Francesi

Church of San Luigi dei Francesi

Founded in 1518 and completed towards the end of the sixteenth century, it is the national French church in Rome. Behind its elegant travertine façade lies a rich interior filled with works by Domenichino, Guido Reni, and, above all, three extraordinary masterpieces by Caravaggio.

Immersed in the dim light of the Contarelli Chapel, The Calling of Saint Matthew, Saint Matthew and the Angel, and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew tell the story of the saint through the dramatic and profoundly human light that belongs to Caravaggio exclusively.

It is a light that breaks through the darkness, caresses faces, reveals gestures, and transforms ordinary men into protagonists of an eternal moment

Standing before these canvases, it is not only a work of art that one observes: one enters the scene, almost startled by the same light that crosses the painting.

San Luigi dei Francesi remains outside the majority of the most hurried itineraries in Rome. Nonetheless, it deserves a pause: just enough time to slow down and allow the eyes to grow accustomed to the twilight.

Rome preserves its most authentic beauty in this way too: without boasting, behind a door crossed almost by chance, in the details that reveal themselves only to those who choose to truly look.

At Parisii, we believe that beauty is not always where everyone is looking.
